In hockey, the goal light is an iconic part of the sport — the moment the puck crosses the line and the red siren flashes, the arena erupts. Traditionally operated by an off-ice official behind the net, the light symbolized certainty and celebration. While modern video review has made that position obsolete, the emotional impact of “lighting the lamp” remains a defining part of the ice hockey experience.
When I noticed that the facility where UNLV Hockey competes lacked this signature part of a hockey game, I saw an opportunity to elevate the game-day atmosphere. I designed and built a custom goal light system, mounted prominently on the wall behind an opponents goaltender and designed for immediate activation during goals.
The result wasn’t just a flashing red light — it was a surge of energy. The added visual and auditory cue amplified every home goal, heightened crowd excitement, and gave players and fans that unmistakable moment of thrill at City National Arena.
